How to (properly) land a Cessna 172/182

In this Post, I will guide you on how to land a Cessna 172/182 in flight sim. The Setting We are sitting in a Cessna 172/182 and are on final of our runway. The Approach We already have a visual to our runway and are approximately 3 Miles out. It's time to lower the first notch of flaps. We are flying an Airspeed of around 80 KIAS. Now the biggest dfference to other planes: Control pitch by thrust. That means: You do not change the elevator position until a few feet above ground. You just trim the plane for 80 KIAS and then if you want to go down, you apply fewer throttle and if you want to go up, you apply more throttle. It sounds strange at first, but try it out! It is much more precise than with the yoke. Short final On short final, you get your flaps even more down, if you haven't done so yet. If there is a strong crosswind, consider to land with only two notches of flaps, to give the wind fewer area to "attack". You also slow down the plane e

Flight Sim Adventures #001 - Windshear in Vienna

Image
7th of May 2017, 19 o'clock. I'm planning to make a short IFR flight in Austria, of course with live weather provided by Active Sky Next. From Wels to Vienna, a flight of approximately one and a half hour. My plane is a 1967 Piper PA-31 Navajo (By Carenado). I am filing my flightplan, powering up the plane and taxiing along to the runway. The weather is nice, partly cloudy and looks really amazing with the REX Soft Clouds. I am departing from runway 27L out to the east. The weather radar only shows green areas, the engines are in the green, everything is good. While climbing on 10.000 feet, the clouds got denser. The Wx-Radar shows some yellow spots. The clouds look stunning from above. At half of the way the clouds got higher and I came into rain and some turbulence, but the journey continues.  ATC instructed me to go down to 3.200 feet. Due to the lack of an altitude selector for the autopilot, I had to fly the descent manually, what already was really h

FSX Addon Guide: Scenery

Image
In this Article I will show you some good Scenery Addons. FTX Global Base FTX Global Base is by ORBX. It makes the scenery better on the WHOLE WORLD. It just replaces the ugly Autogen from default FSX with new, updated tiles, that fit beautifully into each other. It is a Must Have Addon.  Here is an image from Innsbruck. Left is the normal, ugly default Autogen and right is FTX Global Base: When you look at the default Autogen, It looks like Innsbruck is a desert. But with FTX Global, it looks like you had an Addon Scenery for LOWI. Of course, it's not perfect, but one million times better than the default one. Must Have! FlyTampa FlyTampa is a Company that makes Scenery for the biggest Airports in the world. They have amazing Vienna, Oslo, Dubai and so on, Sceneries full of quality. FlyTampa Official Website ORBX ORBX is the King of scenery in FSX. They mostly make small airports that look awesome. You can buy their products seperately, but when

FSX AddOn Guide: Miscellaneous

Image
In this Guide I will show you good Miscellaneous, such that aren't Aircraft and Scenery, AddOns. Weather Engine At the moment there are many engines. I personally use this one. Active Sky Next It's a really good weather engine with many features. There is already a new Version I will speak about below, but this version is perfectly ok. The new version just got a few updates. With ASN you get everything, even windshears and wake turbulence if you fly behind other aircraft. Active Sky 16 + ASCA This is the new version, it has got a few updates and also a nice new cloud effect. It now really looks like you are flying through a cloud.  ASCA is Active Sky Cloud Art and creates awesome cloud formations.  Sound and Camera AddOns EzDok Camera A great AddOn. One of the must haves. Unfortunately it's very complex and hard to set the right settings. But for that what it makes it's awesome. There are two big features: Camera Shaking Camera Positioning

An Introduction to Aircraft Systems (TAWS, GPWS, ...)

Image
TCAS TCAS stands for Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System . Depending on complexity, there are various versions of the TCAS.  In Airliners and increasingly general Aviation Aircraft, the TCAS is showing Traffic Information usually on the ND or the MFD. ND stands for Navigation Display and MFD for Multi Function Display which is most seen in Garmin Glass Cockpits. On those Displays, the pilot sees the map with his route. Surrounding traffic will be shown on this display.  On this picture you can see the ND of an Airliner. The different colored Icons are other planes. In this picture you see another visualization of the traffic with Callsign, destination and aircraft type. So, now let's see what the icons on the ND of an airliner say and what the TCAS does to prevent a collision: BLUE/CYAN UNFILLED DIAMOND Distant traffic, no threat BLUE/CYAN FILLED DIAMOND No threat but proximity traffic YELLOW FILLED CIRCLE Threatening Aircraft. FSX AddOn Guide: Aircraft

Hello, in this post I would like to give you an introduction to FSX Aicraft AddOns. There are many Aircraft AddOns out there, many good ones and many bad ones. There is lots of Freeware, but I will not speak about that, because Freeware can be funny and also good, but it's just not that Quality that Payware has.  But don't stop reading if you are new and thought you could fly with Freeware or even with the FSX Default planes. At the beginning of my FSX flying, I also thought I will stick to the default planes. I definitely didn't want to speed any money on FSX. A few days later I bought my first AddOn, AccuFeel, but I will speak about that in another post. If you don't take it very serious with flight simulation you will probably have enough with Freeware. But I really want to have a good experience, so I definitely go with Payware. And if you also want to enjoy Flight Simming on a high niveau, you can't get around paying some euros/dollars/pounds/whatever.
